SOUND

The student will:

  • use sound to express ideas and non-verbal concepts
  • use the same instrument to produce different sounds and be able to identify various instruments
  • expand ways the body produces sound such as clapping, stomping, and tapping
  • progress from using instruments for loud experimentation to producing a pleasant sound

LISTENING

The student will:

  • begin to distinguish between distinct sounds
  • be able to sense the mood of music, recognizing whether music has a major or minor tone center
  • learn to discern some instruments and phrase parts within a musical recording
  • learn to discern the different sounds of some band and orchestral instruments
  • listen to music and imagine mental pictures of what the music could be describing

VOICE

The student will:

  • use his voice to express moods, tell stories, communicate concepts, and sing memorized lyrics
  • learn to closely imitate a sound heard from an instrument
  •  make a connection with the rhythm of chants and poems
  •  become aware and appreciate the songs, music and instruments of other cultures
  •  create original songs

MUSICAL CONTROLS

the student will:

  • learn controls for the voice
  • show control with instruments to express rest and silence in music
  • respond to legato (smooth sound) and staccato (short detached sound)
  • perform loud, soft and moderately loud
  • learn to use instruments and her body to mark a steady beat and syncopation
  • understand and perform rhythm that is fast, slow, dissimilar, or repeated
  • distinguish high and low tones and ascending and descending tones

MOVEMENT

The student will:

  • change the body response to reflect various styles of music such as jazz, classical, blues, and marches
  • become adept at using hand motions and sign language to enhance songs
  • use his body to imitate creatures and concepts such as elephants or flowing water
  • become more skillful in set patterns of movement, such as skipping or marching to a beat
  • use creative movement and creative drama as a means of expression

PRESENTATION

The student will:

  • learn control to begin or end a musical composition in concert with the whole group
  • learn self confidence to sing or to move alone or in a group
