Welcome to school two day two-year-olds who attend school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. until 12 noon. School is an exciting adventure for these children. Filled with colorful toys, exciting projects, new friends, and new routines, this is a big year of transition for the child and the parents. The student often enjoys independent play but the awareness of others becomes more apparent. The co-oping parent changes any soiled diapers and helps in potty-training.

Math

  • Work on counting numbers one through 10
  • Start to use math vocabulary such as tall, short, big, and little
  • Start to recognize basic shapes: triangle, circle, square
  • Begin to understand concept of measuring through cooking projects and others.
  • Start to match and classify objects by characteristics, such as color and shape

Language Arts

  • Express self in simple sentences, progressing with increasing number of words.
  • Listen and follow simple directions
  • Enjoy books, stories, and finger plays
  • Develop pre-reading skills through play and projects

Social Studies

  • Be aware of self and family
  • Begin to respect rights of others and personal property and space
  • Start awareness of holidays and their names

Science

  • Start to learn about the seasons
  • Become observant of weather conditions
  • Identify body parts
  • Explore world through the senses
  • Begin to understand simple health concepts such as blowing nose, washing hands, healthy diet

Music

  • Repeat or recognize parts of songs, rhymes, finger plays
  • Start to use a steady beat and accompany music with instruments

Art

  • Explore various art media
  • Begin to use art tools such as scissors, crayons, and brushes
  • Recognize the primary colors

Physical Development

  • Explore large and small-motor activities
  • Start to become aware of self in space and concepts of over/under, in/out, etc.

Social/Emotional Development

  • Begin to acclimate to functioning in a group setting
  • Begin to learn to take turns, share classroom toys, help put things away
  • Learn to separate from parent
  • Begin to express feelings in appropriate manner and degree
  • Show care and appropriate use of classroom materials
  • Put on one's coat unassisted
  • Begin interest in peer play
